Mingo and Moses named captains

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Drey Mingo and Courtney Moses have been named captains for the Purdue women's basketball team in the 2012-2013 season.

It is the third consecutive stint as a captain for Mingo who was granted a sixth year by the NCAA in the spring after tearing her ACL in Oct. and the first time for Moses.

“This year’s team has a nice blend of experience and newcomers and I trust that Drey and Courtney will provide the leadership necessary to help create a cohesive unit," Versyp said. "These two young ladies have consistently provided positive leadership by example, by taking others under their wing and by being vocal when necessary. I think the team chose well for this upcoming season and I know we’re all excited to get things started.”

Mingo joined the Boilers prior to the 2009-10 season after playing two seasons at Maryland, but was required to sit out due to NCAA transfer rules. In 2010-11 she was voted a team captain for the first time. Despite missing four games with a life-threatening case of bacterial meningitis, she finished the season averaging 12.0 points and a team-high 5.8 rebounds. As a redshirt junior, Mingo set a Purdue record for season three-point field goal percentage by hitting 27-of-56 threes for 48.2 percent.

Mingo graduated in May with her biology degree and is enrolled in graduate school for her final season.

Moses was the second leading scorer last season, averaging 10.8 points per game, while also finishing second on the team for made three-pointers with 43. Moses set an NCAA Tournament record by hitting nine three-pointers vs. South Dakota State on March 17. As a sophomore, Moses set a school record with 47-consecutive made free throws, the longest free throw streak in the nation in 2011-12. And the former Indiana Miss Basketball led the Big Ten last year with a 90.7 percent (78-of-86) season free throw average.

Purdue begins the season with an exhibition game Nov. 4 against Lindsey Wilson College and have their first regular-season contest on Nov. 10 versus USC-Upstate at home in Mackey Arena.
