Maverick Volleyball program in good hands with Fuller

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - While Harrison is in search of a new head coach for its volleyball program it's cross town rival McCutcheon who has hit a homerun with the hiring of Travis Fuller to take over as the head coach of the Maverick volleyball program.

The Mavericks began open gym workouts this week and first time head coach Travis Fuller is excited to begin his career as a head coach.

"I've been in the area the last three years and I've also coached over at the Lafayette area volleyball academy where we have 26 McCutcheon athletes in the club so it wasn't really a surprise to me the type of players we had so I was actually really excited about the position because I think there is a lot of good young talent coming from McCutcheon High School," said Fuller.

Coach Fuller's first goal is to get the Mavericks to buy into the system that he will put in place at McCutcheon. It's evident how important he feels that will be for the Mavericks to be successful in the fall.

"It's going to be a lot about getting the kids to buy into the system and it's really important the way that i coach that there is a system involved and as soon as the athletes buy into that system that's what we are going to be looking at. Wins and losses will kind of take care of themselves," said Fuller.

Coach Fuller is very familiar with the area volleyball scene, having previously worked as a student manager for Head Coach Dave Shondell and Purdue Volleyball. Fuller was also an assistant coach under Head Coach Brad McCarter at Central Catholic during the 2010 season, a season in which the Knights won the Class 1-A state championship.

Fuller takes over the Lady Mavericks' head coaching position from Cheryl Suter, who resigned at the end of the 2011 season.
