Matt Painter named to the 2013-16 Men's Junior National Team Committee

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (WLFI) - Purdue head coach Matt Painter has been named to the 2013-16 Men’s Junior National Team Committee, USA Basketball announced Thursday.

Chaired by Syracuse’s Jim Boeheim, the committee selects coaches and athletes for USA Basketball’s college-aged competitions, including the 2013 and 2015 FIBA U19 World Championships, the 2014 and 2016 FIBA Americas U18 Championships, the 2013 and 2015 World University Games and the 2015 Pan American games.

Painter is joined on the committee by coaches Bob McKillop (Davidson) and Lorenzo Romar (Washington), as well as former Villanova player Curtis Sumpter, a member of the 2004 USA U20 National Team and the 2011 Pan American Games Team.

The committee appointment is Painter’s third foray into USA Basketball activities since 2009, when he served as an assistant coach for the Team USA squad that captured the gold medal at the FIBA U19 World Championship in Auckland, New Zealand. The championship was the United States’ first at the event since 1991.

Painter ventured into the international spectrum in 2011 as head coach of the U.S. World University Games Team in Shenzhen, China. Despite being knocked from the medal round with a quarterfinal loss, Painter led Team USA to a 7-1 record that tied for the best at the tournament.

Painter also has a history of helping his players earn USA Basketball appointments. In 2009, Robbie Hummel and JaJuan Johnson were invited to the U.S. World University Games Trials. Hummel made the team and helped lead the Americans to a bronze medal in Serbia.

In 2010, Johnson was chosen as part of an elite group of college players known as the USA Men’s Select Team, whose charge was to help Team USA prepare for its eventual gold-medal run at the FIBA World Championship.
