ANDERSON, Ind. (WLFI) - One-by-one players rolled into Anderson University on Saturday morning to embark on another training camp and the start of the 2012 NFL Season.
This marks the third straight year the Colts have called Anderson home for training camp as they will practice at the university from July 29-Aug. 17.
Like many of the Colts rookies, the earliest arrivals to training camp were the first-year players.
Newly signed quarterback Andrew Luck greeted the media with a clean beard as he prepares for his first ever training camp.
“We have so many new guys, new coach, new system and I think just to have practice reps and to be around each other all day for however many weeks it is, it's going to be very beneficial,” Luck said. “Your life turns very simple and you really need that during camp. You really have football to focus on and not much else and that excites me.”
This past month Luck headed down to Miami for four days to train with a number of the Colts wide receivers including Reggie Wayne.
It was Wayne that once again stole the show at the arrival of training camp. As he has done before in the past, Wayne had a little meaning behind his entrance into camp as he was dressed head to toe in army fatigues and exited out of a Humvee.
Wayne was flanked by soldiers from the Indiana National Guard in Shelbyville and announced ‘Reggie Wayne reporting for duty.’
“These guys are selfless workers who put it all on the line, and that’s exactly what we are going to have to do this year,” said Wayne. “It's time to work, it's time to go back to do things that we normally do and that's going out there and making Colts fans proud and having fun.”
That duty will officially begin on Sunday as practice for the Colts will start with a morning walk-through running from 9:30-10:50 a.m. and then a practice open to the public lasting from 1:50-4:30 p.m.
Sunday will start a three-day stretch of two-a-day practices for the Colts before an off-day on Wednesday.
Training camp will span over three weeks with the Colts having 12 days of two-a-day practices and three days of one practice.
The chance to finally put on pads is approaching and for the Colts that have been through the grind of an entire NFL off-season, how you utilize these days goes a long way to deciding the outcomes come Sundays in the fall.
“This (training camp) an OTA’s are the most important parts of the season,” linebacker Pat Angerer said. “This is where you win games and become a great team.”
