LOGANSPORT, Ind. (WLFI) - Logansport's gymnastics team is enjoying its most successful season in program history. The Berries' success is unusual though. The team is led by freshmen including its two top performers: Kelley Platt and Emily Pomasl.
"It is kind of crazy to think that we are so young as a team," said Logansport freshman Kelley Platt. "I had to step up a lot because I have been under this pressure since I was really young."
"Kelley and I have been competing together for a long time," said Logansport freshman Emily Pomasl. "We have been competing together for almost ten years. At the beginning of the year I was really nervous because everyone was depending on Kelly and I. Right now it is just fun."
"I was very impressed how they handled the senior role pretty much as freshman and I can't wait to see them grow up the next three to four years," said Logansport Morgan Kline.
Even though the Berries squad is young. They set their goals high at the beginning of the season and then began checking them off. They breezed through sectionals, bringing home first place. Then they set their sights on advancing to state and they accomplished it. The Berries claimed their first regional title in school history and now will add their first year to the regional championship banner.
"It's unbelievable that we have regionals but advancing to state as a team is amazing," said Platt. "It has been our goal since the beginning of the season started. Just seeing that up on the board is very exciting."
"If I come back later after high school and college and I have my kids and my daughter is in gymnastics, I can show her that we were the first team to win regionals and advance to state," said Pomasl.
"I can't wait to come in here in ten years and show all my family and friends that I was part of that team," said Kline. "I feel so honored and blessed to be a part of it."
This will be the first time that Logansport competes in the state finals. The team hopes to finish in the top five.
Seven members of the Berries team will compete in state this weekend. Four of them are freshmen. Competition at the state finals begins at 1 pm on Saturday at Ball State.
