Knights preparing for Canterbury

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Central Catholic's girls basketball team recently brought home its eighth consecutive sectional title. Entering this postseason, the Knights knew it wouldn't be an easy task to keep the streak alive. In the first round of sectionals, Central Catholic faced undefeated Frontier. But the Lady Knights rose to the occasion and pulled off the 48-44 win. Central Catholic then picked up two more victories to once again dominate sectionals.

"It means a lot to keep the streak alive," said Central Catholic senior forward Alanna Roswarski. "We have been doing it for a long time. We have a great coaching staff and great teammates and I really think that is what helped us get through sectionals. Frontier is a great team and all those teams we played. We had to come out and play our game. "

"It meant a lot to the girls to keep that streak alive," said Central Catholic head coach Craig Devault. "That was one of our goals going in to sectionals was to keep on repeating and when we drew Frontier we knew it was going to be a task but the girls handled it really well. They ended up getting the next two wins and keeping the streak alive."

The Lady Knights then entered regional competition on Saturday. The last time Central Catholic won a regional title was in 2006, the same year the Lady Knights won a state championship. Fast forward seven years to this past Saturday. In game one, the Lady Knights beat Randolph Southern 64-43. The Lady Knights then advanced to the regional title game. The contest the girls had lost three years in a row, but this year proved to be different. After trailing North Vermillion at halftime, the Lady Knights rallied in the second half to win the regional championship, 46-34.

"Winning regionals was a surreal experience," said Central Catholic junior forward Emily Denhart. "It has been our goal since the beginning of this season to push past regionals. Finally we pushed past regionals and hopefully we do well in semi-state."

"It is really special to bring home a regional title," said Alanna Roswearski. "I have played in that game now for four years and it was always hard going home in that championship game and I think this year we really pulled together as a team."
 
Central Catholic faces Fort Wayne Canterbury this Saturday in semi-state. The Lady Knights are the underdogs in this matchup, but it isn't the first time they have been in this position. The girls are just focusing on playing their best and maybe they will find themselves playing for a state title, just like the last Lady Knights team that won that coveted regional championship.
