Jerraud Powers to miss Thursday's game at Jacksonville with toe injury

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WLFI) - Indianapolis Colts cornerback Jerraud Powers will miss Thursday night’s game at Jacksonville with an injury to his right big toe. Interim coach Bruce Arians made the announcement today before practice.

“The only guy who will not play is Jerraud Powers. He will not play. Everybody else is probably going to make it. We’ll see right up to game time,” said Arians.

Starting cornerback Vontae Davis has also been ruled out for Thursday’s game which means the Colts will be relying on the bottom of their depth chart when it comes to their secondary.

“Next guy up. Darius (Butler) will play. Josh (Gordy) will go in at nickel. Marshay Green will go in at dime. I had to learn another name,” said Arians.

Coming off an emotional home win against the Miami Dolphins, the Colts don’t have much time to prepare for their mid week game against the Jaguars.

“It was a huge win. Then to have Chuck (Pagano) in the locker room before and after the game was great. We have to learn from the last time we had an emotional win. We got our brains beat out. I’ll remind them of that. The short weeks are always tough on both teams, especially the one that’s traveling. We have to be able to focus, get focused on practice, meetings, extra meeting time. It’s not a physical week. It’s all a mental week,” said Arians.

In the Colts first meeting against Jacksonville, the offense went on a five-play, 48-yard drive in the final two minutes that set up a 37-yard field goal by Adam Vinatieri, giving the Colts a 17-16 lead.

But with only 56 seconds remaining, the Jaguars needed just one play to cover 80 yards thanks to wide receiver Cecil Shorts outrunning the Colts defense for the game winning score.

“We let that one slip away. That last play was tough to swallow,” safety Antoine Bethea said. “That’s in the rearview mirror. We have the game on Thursday. Hopefully, we can bounce back.”

With a win on Thursday night, the Colts would equal their longest winning streak since the end of the 2010 season.

Defensive end Dwight Freeney was a part of that streak late in the season and wants to see this team, albeit a much different one, continue to achieve success that many critics didn’t foresee during the preseason.

“I’m very proud but definitely not satisfied,” Freeney said of the Colts 5-3 record. “I’m proud to say that we are in a good place, we’re in the hunt.”
