INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WLFI) - The Indianapolis Colts will be inducting former Colts running back Edgerrin James into the Ring of Honor during the teams' game against the Jacksonville Jaguars on September 23. James will be the ninth member to be selected to the group.
“I am very pleased to announce the addition of Edgerrin James to the Colts’ Ring of Honor,” said Owner and CEO Jim Irsay. “Edgerrin is one of the most significant players in our history, and he embodies the talent and competitive nature we seek in every player. Edgerrin ran his way into the record books and into the hearts of all Colts fans. He now is taking a rightful place among others enshrined in our Ring, and he represents all that is right with the Horseshoe.”
“I feel great. It is a tremendous honor," said James. "It’s one of those things that you set out to do and hope to have a career where you can leave a lasting imprint. For me, it’s super important because a lot of my young kids didn’t get a chance to see me play. Now, at least they’ll know their daddy could play a little bit.”
James was picked 4th overall in 1999 by the Colts. He leads the franchise in many categories, including most career attempts (2,188), rushing yards (9,226), rushing touchdowns (64), 100-plus yard games (49) and 1,000-yard seasons (five).
He led the Colts in rushing for a team-high six seasons (1999-2000, 2002-05), which includes a franchise-best 1,709 rushing yards in 2000. James also led the NFL in rushing in 1999 and 2000, becoming the first player to lead the league in his first two seasons. He currently ranks 11 th all-time in NFL history with 12,246 rushing yards.
Others who have been selected into the Colts' Ring of Honor are Robert Irsay, Bill Brooks, Tony Dungy, Jim Harbaugh, Marvin Harrison, Chris Hinton, Ted Marchibroda and the 12 th Man.
“It feels great to be among the names (in the Ring of Honor)," said James. "Not only did you play, but you were one of the top players to play in the organization. No matter where I go or what I do, I’m always a Colt.”
