WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Purdue women's basketball team fell to Iowa on Sunday 72-52 at Mackey Arena.
It's the first time No.18 Purdue had lost at home to the Hawkeyes since Feb. 6, 1998, breaking a streak of 12-straight wins.
Head coach Sharon Versyp was asked after the game about her team and their confidence level.
“We'll find out on Wednesday, It's not how you fall it's how hard you fight to get back up. Are we disappointed, yeah but do we want to lose are next four and not make the NCAA Tournament. Or are we going to do something about it and win the games that we need to and it doesn't get any easier each step of the way,” said Purdue head coach Sharon Versyp.
Purdue trailed by just five points at halftime 32-27. In the second half Purdue pulled within six points but Iowa always had an answer in the 20 point win.
The Boilermakers made just 31 percent of their field goals while Iowa shot 50 percent from the floor.
“Everybody has to believe in themselves, I tell them all the time that they are going to make a shot, they are going to do this and that. It doesn't matter if I tell them though, they are the ones that have to get that confidence and have that swagger,” said Versyp. “I thought we had it back after the Wisconsin game. We practiced really well and we were really focused and did some really great things. Today I was shocked,” said Versyp.
Purdue's Sam Ostarello recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Purdue's Drey Mingo added 14 points. KK Houser finished with 12 points.
Purdue drops to 19-6 on the season and 8-4 in Big Ten play. The Boilermakers return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Bloomington to face the Indiana Hoosiers. Tip-off is set for 7 pm.
