Indianapolis Colts training camp update

ANDERSON, Ind. (WLFI) - More 90-degree heat brought a spirited practice on Thursday afternoon as the Colts once again strapped on the pads in front of fans at Anderson University.

Thursday’s practice marked the second time the Colts have put pads on this training camp and the hitting was significant throughout practice.

“You never want to see guys fighting, somebody can get hurt stupidly. But the intensity was good,” offensive coordinator Bruce Arians said. “Usually when it gets that hot on a day like today sometimes it happens.”

Quarterback Andrew Luck had another efficient day throwing the ball in 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills, but cornerback Jerraud Powers would steal the show with a late interception that he returned for a touchdown.

The boisterous defense had a few more things to cheer about on Thursday as the heat brought out some intensity in players on both sides of the football.

One of the moral vocal defenders on Thursday was defensive end Cory Redding.

The new Colt hasn’t shied away from a little yelling during practice and he knows another day out on the practice field offers another chance for the hybrid 3-4 defense to become cohesive.

“The canvas is not complete. There’s still a lot more room to grow, and we’re still painting our brush every day,” Redding said of the defense.

“Keep on building and building every single day on stopping the run, challenging every ball that’s in the air, not giving them a blade of grass, and having fun while we’re doing it. As long as we keep that mindset we’ll be fine.”

The Indianapolis Colts acquired linebackers Moise Fokou and Greg Lloyd in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for cornerback Kevin Thomas and a conditional seventh round selection in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Fokou, 6-1, 236 pounds, is a four-year NFL veteran who has totaled 98 tackles (66 solo), one sack, four passes defended, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries in 43 career games (22 starts). In 2011, he totaled 27 tackles and two passes defended and also ranked second on the team with 10 special teams tackles.

In 2009, Fokou tied for first on the team in special teams tackles (20) and also recovered two fumbles. In the same season, he set a career-high with nine tackles at San Diego (11/15). Fokou was originally a seventh round (230th overall) draft selection by the Eagles in 2009 after his collegiate career at Maryland.

Lloyd, 6-1, 247 pounds, was a seventh round draft selection by Philadelphia in 2011. He was promoted to the 53-man roster in November of last season after spending the first 12 weeks of the campaign on the team’s practice squad. Lloyd started 22-of-34 games at middle linebacker at the University of Connecticut and registered 177 tackles, 3.0 sacks and one interception during his collegiate career. He is the son of Rhonda Nelson and former Steelers linebacker Greg Lloyd.

Thomas was originally selected by the Colts in the third round (94th overall) of the 2010 NFL Draft and competed in nine contests.

Linebacker A.J. Edds will be placed on Injured Reserve after clearing waivers. Edds was signed by the Colts off the New England Patriots practice squad on September 28, 2011.
