VEEDERSBURG, Ind. (WLFI) - The Fountain Central Mustangs are undefeated on the season and will take on Clinton Central Friday. Their offense is averaging over 40 points per game and Senior tailback Trent Spear is a key contributor. After missing out on last season, a pair of ACL surgeries have him back in the line-up. The only time during the game he's on the bench is during extra points.
When Trent Spear tore his ACL last season, there was never a doubt in his mind as to if he could make it back on the field, it was more a matter of when.
"As soon as the doctor told me if I work hard enough I could make it back, there wasn't a doubt in my mind I was coming back. After watching that season go by, there wasn't anything more I wanted to do than play another season of football," said Senior running back Trent Spear.
Spear's returned for his Senior season guiding the Mustangs to a perfect record thus far. His 22 touchdowns and 1100 plus yards rushing make this year almost unimaginable.
"(This season's) gone better (than I envisioned). The group of guys around me have made it so much better. I'm working hard and I couldn't ask for any other guys to play with" said Spear.
"Trent coming back this year has meant everything to us because he's such a talented player. He can run, he can catch the ball, and he's a leader. Having him out here able to play has been great for us," said Fountain Central head coach Rick Malone.
He admits some of his success has do with opposing teams inability to key in on him. If you shut down him down his teammates, Scott Moore, Sam Shoaf, or Zack Robertson are a just a few of the other play-makers leading this offensvie attack.
"I think that's a big part of some of the teams mistakes that we've played is stacking the box and leaving people like Zack Robertson wide open. That kid is just amazing. You almost can't touch him. He's unreal," said Spear.
Spear's been a big part of a team making it back to their first semi-state appearance in over a quarter century. 1983 was their last, that season they also won the state title.
