WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Harrison's wrestling team captured both the sectional and regional titles this season. Three Raiders claimed Regional titles and nine wrestlers qualified to compete at semi-state on Saturday. The team is enjoying this success, after all the hard work each member put in during this past year.
"All those hard practices, day after day, week after week and three months after talking about it, it finally comes true," said Harrison's head coach Scott Van Der Aa. "I just think it makes that much more special for the kids. "
"It's awesome to be able to win sectionals and regionals," said Harrison sophomore wrestler Seth Meyer. "To be compared to one of the better teams at Harrison, the 2010 team, that is phenomenal."
One reason for the Raiders success is the unity of their team. In an individual sport this group has pulled together as one. They even have taken it as far as dying their hair blond, as a group.
"We dye our hair bleach blond to symbolize unity of our team and how much of a family we are," said Meyer.
"Just shows how big and how dedicated this wrestling team is," said Harrison sophomore wrestler Connor Armuth. "We are a big family and we work hard together. "
"When you have nine guys that are wrestling for Saturday and we still have 30 kids show up for the practice, that just shows me that all those team bonding things really paid off," said Van Der Aa.
The Raiders are gearing up for semi-state this weekend. They are focused on placing as many wrestlers as they can in state and hoping that at least one of the Raiders brings home a state title.
