DALLAS, TX (WLFI) - Purdue's football team struggled under interim head coach Patrick Higgins in the Heart of Dallas Bowl. Oklahoma State dominated Purdue in a 58-14 win for the Cowboys.
Purdue's defense forced Oklahoma State's offense off the field with a three and out in the Cowboys first drive of the game. However, it was all down hill after that for the Boilers.
Oklahoma State scored its first touchdown on a four yard pass from Clint Chelf to Charlie Moore. The Cowboys then poured on 38 points to give Oklahoma State a 45-0 lead before Purdue scored a point.
The Boilers found the end zone for the first time with 18 seconds left in the third quarter. Purdue's quarterback Robert Marve connected with Brandon Cottom for a 32 yard touchdown pass. The Boilers added their second touchdown on a 16 yard touchdown pass from Marve to Tommie Thomas.
The Cowboys, a year removed from a Fiesta Bowl win that capped the best season in school history, forced five turnovers in the win, including Marve's two interceptions.
"We just ran into a very good football team today," said Higgins. "As you know, when you play a quality opponent like Oklahoma State, when you turn the ball over five times, you don't take advantage of your opportunities, the game can turn out like this.
Marve finished with 212 yards passing and two touchdowns. Purdue's running back Akeem Shavers rushed for 93 yards on 14 carries and hauled in four passes for 54 yards. However, Shavers went down with a knee injury in the game and did not return.
"Right now, we still don't know what's wrong," said Shavers. "Everything looks good, but we have to get an MRI to be a hundred percent."
"We didn't want it to end this way, but everything comes to an end at some point," said Shavers. "We tried to make the best of this opportunity. We ended up shooting ourselves in the foot a bit, but I'm sure we'll be all right.
Former Purdue quarterbacks Drew Brees and Kyle Orton were in attendance for the game. Also in attendance were former Purdue head coach Danny Hope and new Purdue head coach Darrell Hazell.
Hazell will coach Kent State in Sunday’s GoDaddy.com Bowl against Arkansas State. He is scheduled to start at Purdue on Monday.
Purdue finished the season at 6-7 and drops to 0-4 in bowl games on January 1.
