WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - The San Diego Padres are set to open big league camp on February 20, 2012. Former McCutcheon Maverick Clayton Richard is excited to get back to work after an injury riddled 2011 season.
Last season was unlike any other for San Diego Padre Clayton Richard. Shoulder trouble started in spring training and by July, the former McCutcheon Maverick was forced to the disabled list for the remainder of the season. It was a difficult time for Richard. However, what he learned along the way will benefit him for the remainder of his career.
"It did help me gain perspective, and I think that is something that helped me understand how fortunate I am to be in the position I am to play this game. That is kind of the goal for this season, to go out and be healthy all year and do everything within my power to improve," said Clayton Richard.
After season ending shoulder surgery, the aspect of the game he missed the most was the ability to compete against the best athletes in the world.
"I'm extremely motivated to pitch well this year, I cant wait to get out there and get on the mound and throw to hitters. It seems like forever since the last time I took the mound. It was in San Francisco in July so it has been a long time and I cant wait to get out there and face some hitters and start pitching again," said Richard.
Going out every fifth day and giving the Padres a chance to win is Richards goal for the 2012 season. Everything else he says, "will take care of itself."
