LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Lafayette Jeff's girls golf team won their first regional title since 2002 this past weekend. The match came down to the wire and was decided by a tie breaker. Needless to say, the team was very excited when they found out they had won.
"Once the scores got in first we realized that we were tied and we were just waiting for the fifth scores of the other teams to come in too," said Lafayette Jeff Sophomore golfer Abbie Carlsen. "We realized we won it and we didn't know what to do, we were just going crazy."
"We were all ecstatic," said Lafayette Jeff Sophomore golfer Samantha Hatter. "We all contributed and even our fifth score contributed to the tie breaker. So, everyone was a part of it. It has been ten years since we won it in 2002 but it is just a great triumph."
"We haven't done this under Coach Hatter as a coach and we were in shock," said Lafayette Jeff Junior golfer Lindsey Burklow. "We didn't really know what to say. We were just standing there speechless."
After coming off the emotional weekend, the girls have turned their attention to preparing for state where they hope to finish in the top ten.
"We were really excited because this is the first year that we get to compete in the first and second day," said Hatter.
"I really want to be in the top ten as a team," said Burklow. "Top ten at state would be awesome to accomplish."
"We are excited that it is a two day tournament," said Lafayette Jeff Head Coach John Hatter. "We are going to just go down there and enjoy the process and play the best golf that we can and whatever happens, happens."
Regardless where the team finishes this weekend, the team is very proud of what they have accomplished this season. And with just one senior on this team, the future looks very bright for the Lady Bronchos.
The Lady Bronchos will play on both Friday and Saturday in the state finals due to their first place finish at the Lafayette Jeff Regional. Play begins at 8: 30 am on both days and will take place at The Legends Golf Club in Franklin Indiana.
