MINNEAPOLIS, MN. (WLFI) - For the third consecutive game the Purdue football team got off to a great start, and just like the previous two weeks the Boilermakers could not add to their lead against the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Minnesota scored 44 unanswered points and defeated the Boilermakers 44-28 at TCF Bank Stadium.
Golden Gopher freshman QB Philip Nelson threw three touchdown passes in the first half of his second college start for Minnesota, and the Gophers breezed to their first Big Ten victory of the season in front of their home fans.
Nelson led Minnesota on scoring drives on four straight possessions. During that stretch, he completed 12 straight passes and had all 246 of his yards in the first half on the way to a 34-7 lead, more points than Minnesota had in any game last year.
The Boilermakers have now lost 4 consecutive games to begin Big Ten play and currently sit at 3-5 overall. The Last time Purdue started 0-4 in the Big Ten was 2008, the gold and black finished that season with a 4-8 record overall.
Up next for Purdue is a home matchup against the Penn State. A game time has yet to be announced for next Saturday's games against the Nittany Lions.
