CHICAGO, Ill. (WLFI) - The Indianapolis Colts scored first in its game against the Chicago Bears on Sunday.
Colts' linebacker Jerrell Freeman intercepted Bears' quarterback Jay Cutler's pass and returned it for a touchdown.
Colts jumped out to an early 7-0 lead but after that point the Bears took over.
“It wasn’t the start we wanted. It was a bad start to the game, but a great start to the season," said Bears' wide receiver Brandon Marshall.
Jay Cutler passed for 333 yards and two touchdowns in the Bears 41-21 win. He completed nine of his passes to Brandon Marshall who had 119 yards receiving and one touchdown.
"We’re trying to build a new thing here in Chicago," said Marshall. "It’s going to take a lot of hard work. It was a great start today.”
Colts' quarterback Andrew Luck made his regular season debut.
It was a tough day for the rookie quarterback as he turned the ball over four times by throwing three interceptions and fumbling once.
Luck did complete 23-45 passes for 309 yards and one touchdown.
“I think trying to take a lot of learning experiences out of it," said Luck. "When you’re responsible for four turnovers, it’s hard to win, it’s hard to be productive as an offense. Three picks and a fumble for me, those are killers. A lot of credit goes to them for making those plays. Not too many fond memories I think of an opening loss.”
Colts' wide receiver Reggie Wayne was Luck's number one target in the game.
Wayne caught nine passes for 135 yards.
Luck shared his thoughts on how he thought Wayne played.
“I think he’s obviously a great player and sets a great example for all of us on offense, especially young guys. He came up big in a lot of situations which I wish we could have punched a couple in the red zone with him. I know I threw another interception but I think he sets a great example for all of us and I am lucky to play with him," said Luck.
Colts' tight end Coby Fleener hauled in six catches for 82 yards.
The Colts drop to 0-1 while the Bears improve to 1-0. Indianapolis will play the Minnesota Vikings at 1 p.m. on Sept. 16. The Bears will face the Green Bay Packers at 8:20 p.m. on Sept. 13.
