WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - It's been a very big day for a number of area high school student-athletes. Student-athletes from West Lafayette and Central Catholic signed on the dotted lines in front of family and friends.
West Lafayette Senior Ben Griggs signed on the dotted line to play college football at Walsh University in Canton, Ohio. The six foot four, 230 pound tight end helped the Red Devils win 43 games during his high school career. Griggs caught 25 passes for 355 yards and 5 touchdowns as a Red Devil. Number 9 also racked up 31 solo tackles and 7 tackles for loss as a defensive end. The Cavaliers are a division two program that is a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
Three more Red Devils seniors signed national letters of intent at their favorite high school Wednesday.
As Katie Bittner, Bobbie Burgess, and Sarah Collicott signed letters of intent in front of a large number of family and friends.
Katie Bittner signed to play college soccer next season at Purdue. Bittner scored 26 goals last season for the Red Devils. Bobbie Burgess inked her signature on a national letter of intent with Georgetown University, where she will run cross country and track for the Hoyas. Burgess finished third in last fall's girls' state cross country meet in leading the Red Devils' team to a second-place finish at state. Meanwhile, Sarah Collicott signed on to play college volleyball next season at Indiana Wesleyan. Collicott was a four-year starter for West Side volleyball and earned All-Hoosier Conference honors.
At Lafayette Central Catholic, Will Jones and Timmy Mills signed letters of intent today and will be college football teammates at Hillsdale College, a Division Two school located in Hillsdale, Michigan. Mills and Jones are two of 24 Class of 2013 Chargers' student-athletes. Mills was a wide receiver on the Knights' Class A state title team, catching 37 passes for 652 yards and four touchdowns. Mills also rushed for six touchdowns and threw three scoring passes last season. Jones was also an offensive standout for Central Catholic Head Coach Kevin O'Shea, rushing for 525 yards and 10 T-D's and catching 32 passes for 363 yards and three scores. Jones is projected to play cornerback next season for the Chargers.
