Purdue football wins at Iowa

IOWA CITY, Iowa (WLFI) - Paul Griggs kicked a 46-yard field goal as time expired to lift Purdue to a 27-24 victory over Iowa in a Big Ten college football contest Saturday at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City, Iowa.

The victory snaps a five-game losing streak for the Boilermakers and is the first win by Purdue football in Iowa City since 1992.

"That's what being a Boilermaker is all about," said Purdue Head Coach Danny Hope, whose job status has been a much-discussed topic on internet message boards during the past few weeks. "Being a Boilermaker means you have to hang in there and keep swinging the whole time and never give up."

Boilermaker quarterback Robert Marve engineered the game-winning drive to get into field goal range for Griggs' winning kick. Marve scrambled for 17 yards then completed a 20-yard pass to Antavian Edison prior the Griggs' game-winner.

"We went on the field with, I think, 16 seconds on the clock," said Marve. "And kind of pieced some plays together to give him (Griggs) the opportunity."

Purdue offensive coordinator Gary Nord received a game ball from his fellow coaches and the Boiler players. Nord missed the game while recovering from a back injury that he suffered Wednesday.

The victory improves the Boilermakers Big Ten record to 1-5 and overall mark to 4-6. The win also means the Boilermakers remain bowl eligible.

"That's a great win," said running back Ralph Bolden. "Keeps my bowl hopes alive. That's what we aim for right now."

Purdue faces Illinois Saturday, November 17, at 3:30 p.m. Eastern time in Champaign, Illinois.
