WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - 20th-ranked Indiana defeated Purdue for the first time in four years, handing the Boilermakers a 78-61 defeat in men's college basketball Saturday night at Mackey Arena.
"To me, it looked like it meant more to them, just right from the start," said Purdue head coach Matt Painter. "You can see guys facial expressions and you can see guys body language and I thought they were more engaged. And if we could have made that play at the end when we were down four and they ended up losing it would have been a shame. They deserved to win the game. They were tougher than us and quicker to the ball and like I said, they deserved to win the game."
"Having the chance to be one of the first people in history to go undefeated against them and that gets taken away. It sucks, said Purdue senior guard Lewis Jackson. "You have to tip your hat to them though because they have been at the bottom, and they have lost to us three years in a row and they are tired of hearing it."
The Boilermakers led 13-8 after a steal and dunk by freshman Jacob Lawson but the Hoosiers answered with an 11-0 run to take a 19-13 lead.
Victory Oladipo led the Hoosiers with 23 points and eight rebounds as Indiana improved to 6-6 in Big Ten play.
With the loss, Purdue drops to 5-5 in conference play and 15-8 overall.
Robbie Hummel led the Boilers with 16 points and 10 rebounds. D.J. Byrd added 15 points while Kelsey Barlow scored 12 points for the Boilers.
