WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - All five Indiana starters scored in double figures and the third-ranked Hoosiers dominated Purdue at Mackey Arena Wednesday night in posting a 97-60 victory over the Boilermakers.
“When you play hard you get to do whatever you want, Indiana played hard and they took us behind the woodshed and they whipped us. You can talk when you are out there and you are up forty points. It’s like the old saying going, it’s not bragging when you can back it up and they backed it up,” said Purdue head coach Matt Painter.
Indiana was led by Cody Zeller, who scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Christian Watford and Victor Oladipo added 17 points apiece for IU, as the Hoosiers improved to 7-1 in Big Ten play and 19-2 overall.
“We have all seen them on TV and they are a top five team in the country. We knew what the tempo was going to be when we came into the game and we expected it. We really didn’t play up to it,” said junior forward Travis Carroll.
Freshman center A.J. Hammons led the Boilermakers with a game-high 30 points while freshman point guard Ronnie Johnson added 13 points as Purdue trailed 47-27 at halftime and never threatened Indiana in the second half.
“Pretty much we started getting down on ourselves which we have been trying to work on but we really got down on ourselves and should have pulled together but we really didn’t,” said freshman center A.J. Hammons.
The loss drops the Boilermakers to 4-4 in conference play and 11-10 overall.
