WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Brent Hofman earned his 5th Men's City Golf Championship presented by Bob Rohrman Toyota Sunday by defeating Shane Fry 4 & 3 in the championship match Sunday on the Kampen Course at Purdue University's Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex.
Hofman, who won his 4th City title in 2009, defeated 2010 City champion Craig Hutchinson to advance to Sunday's finals. Fry, the former West Lafayette boys golf coach, elimnated defending City champion in Saturday's semifinals.
Hofman closed out the title match by making a 12-foot putt on the 15th hole.
"I play golf for fun and this is what is fun to me," Hofman said. "I really enjoy doing it (golf)."
Hofman also had high praise for Fry, who begins high school football practice Monday morning as the defensive coordinator for West Lafayette High School.
"Very impressed (with Fry). I mean, he never won a match in the championship before (this year) and to get to the final, that's a big honor," Hofman added. "He's got a good game."
Fry said shortly after the match that Hofman was a very deserving champion.
"I played a little below average but taking nothing away from Brent. He did a great job," Fry said. "He kept the pressure on the whole time. He took command early, and he made the putts."
Hofman said he thoroughly enjoyed the 2012 tournament experience.
"It's fun," Hofman said. "And every one of them is fun to win. And (next year) I'll try for number six."
Other flight winners were Ryan Williamson (first flight), Nik Cross (second flight), Mark Pendleton (third flight), Bryce Burgess (fourth flight), and Leonard Sarten (fifth flight).
