United Way doesn't meet $5 million goal

First time in 35 years it fell short

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - The $5 million goal United Way of Greater Lafayette set out to raise for area 23 partner agencies in the Lafayette area has not been met. It's the first time in 35 years for United Way to not reach its goal. United Way raised more than $4.4 million, just over $500,000  short.

Executive Director James Taylor said tough economic times are to blame.

"Our campaign is heavily work base focused and there were 5,000 people who weren't working this fall that were working here last year," explained Taylor. "So they weren't there to be asked. We know that is a big challenge for folks, particularly when we are dealing with income issues."

Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Lafayette Executive Director Ronda McKinnis agreed that the economy has affected United Way.

"The larger companies that are such strong supporters of United Way have laid off a lot of people," McKinnis said. "Those are the individuals that are the donors so there was no way that could not affect the outcome of the campaign."

Taylor said they are looking to use a 10.8% cut across the board for all organizations that benefit from United Way. McKinnis said the money Big Brothers, Big Sisters receives from United Way is over a third of its budget.

"It's vital to the program for the services we provide to the children here in Lafayette. We are probably going to need to make a few adjustments to the services we provide. Because not only the United Way allocations but other revenue has taken a hit in this economy," McKinnis said.

Even though it's the first time in 35 years United Way hasn't met its goal, McKinnis says they have still done an outstanding job, especially with a tough economy.

"They raised a phenomenal amount given the economy and I think that our hats should just be off to the staff and the volunteers. And we will make those dollars stretch just as far as we can," McKinnis said.

Taylor says they are still accepting donations. You can call United Way of Greater Lafayette at (765) 742-9077 or email them at unitedway@uw.lafayette.in.us for more information on giving a donation.
