TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) - It was standing room only at the Tippecanoe County Commissioners meeting Monday.
Most of them, homeowners speaking out against Milestone Contractors' request for re-zoning land around their homes from agricultural to Industrial three, a request needed so the company can re-locate its business.
During the meeting, emotions ran high.
"I would like everyone that is in favor of this being blocked to stand," said homeowner Sally Mohler.
"I will stop this hearing right now, if you do not vacate the podium and let somebody else speak," said Commissioner John Knochel.
Homeowners who live around the proposed asphalt plant and gravel pit along County Road 300 North, voiced concerns over increased truck traffic, a decrease in property values, environmental concerns as well as safety.
Heartland Church Pastor Drew Poppleton said the church has a lot invested in its location.
"We did not invest 1.5 million to move next to I-3 and I-2 zoning," said Poppleton.
Despite homeowners requests, commissioners approved the re-zoning two to one, with David Byers casting the dissenting vote.
Milestone area manager Jim Gross said that location was chosen because of its proximity to the new Hoosier Heartland Corridor
"Anybody that's in business knows that they have to have a competitive, viable business and that's why we've looked at this site in lieu of other sites south of town," said Gross.
"We are going to meet, have met, and will meet and continue to meet forever as required by the law, all federal, state and local permits," said Dan Teder, an attorney for Milestone Contractors.
After the meeting, one homeowner said this wasn't the end, just the beginning.
