LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Initial results from an Area Mail Processing study reveals the United States Postal Service (USPS) would save more than $4.5 million by moving the mail processing operations from the Lafayette Processing and Distribution Facility to the Indianapolis Processing and Distribution Center.

The USPS is holding a public meeting to discuss its proposal to move mail processing operations from Lafayette to Indianapolis. That meeting will be November 16, 2011 at Duncan Hall in Lafayette from 7:00-9:00 p.m. Duncan Hall is located at 619 Ferry Street in Lafayette.

The study began in September to determine if it would be easy to consolidate what the USPS calls redundant operations to see if any efficiencies and cost savings would be achieved. Initial study results support moving the mail processing operations from Lafayette to Indy.

Here's a breakdown of the study:

Business Case of Estimated Savings

  • Annual Mail Processing Employee Savings - $,658,992
  • Annual Management Savings - $596,384
  • Annual Maintenance Savings - $1,512,501
  • Annual Transportation Savings - $808,799

The USPS said the proposed annual savings in the draft Area Mail Processing feasibility study are approximately $4,576,676. It also stated due to the consolidation, a net decrease of approximately 29 positions is projected.

The USPS stated the public's input will be considered prior to a final decision.

No final decision has been made and postal representatives will give a presentation at the meeting.
