Ways offered to keep Asian carp from NE Indiana marsh

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) - The Army Corps of Engineers is considering ways for keeping Asian carp out of a marsh near Fort Wayne.

Eagle Marsh has been identified as a way the invasive fish might reach the Great Lakes.

Asian carp have infested the Mississippi and Illinois rivers and are approaching a Chicago-area shipping canal through which they might reach Lake Michigan.

Scientists say the ravenous fish could out-compete native species for food.

The corps has issued a report comparing nine alternatives for blocking the carp's access through Eagle Marsh. The marsh is considered a possible connection between the Asian carp-infested Wabash River and the Maumee River, which flows into Lake Erie.

The corps will hold a public meeting on the alternatives Dec. 4 at the Allen County main library in Fort Wayne.
