LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - January 19 was the first day for candidates to file to run for elected office.
It was far from standing room only on the first day, but election officials said the number of people coming in to file will pick up over the next month.
Election Co-Director Debbie Ingersoll said she expects there to be enough people to fill a primary ballot.
“Sometimes we have people at the door first thing and other times they do not come in for a couple of days,” said Ingersoll. “With the weather, it is not a surprise.”
Dan McDaniel was first in line on the 19th. He said he is excited about running for Lafayette City Council - District 5.
"Oh, I am going to go from day one,” said McDaniel. “I was told in politics, 'No one believes you can do it until you do it.' The campaign starts today."
"It shows people are interested in running and it gives the citizens a choice,” said Ingersoll. “It is a good thing."
Residents who want to file have until February 18 at noon to get the necessary paperwork in to election officials.
