WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Calvin Woods,18, from West Lafayette, was driving to his job
when police say he drove around the sign, tried to stop when he saw
the water, but ended up sliding in.
Deep water eventually brought the vehicle to a halt.
The Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Department and fire crews
responded just after 1:00 p.m. to rescue a driver stranded in a
Jeep on State Road 43, along the Wabash River.
Rescuers had to use a boat to reach Woods, and tow ropes were
necessary to return the vehicle to higher ground.
Woods was ticked for disregarding the signs.
Driving in flooded areas is particularly dangerous. According to
FEMA, driving in as little as six inches of water can be dangerous
and cause loss of control. A foot of water is enough to float many
vehicles and even Sport Utility Vehicles (SUV's) will often float
in two feet of water.
Once floating, cars can quickly be swept away, so it is better
to avoid entering questionable areas while driving.
