WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - A man who abducted a 19-year-old woman in Mishawaka and released her in White County remains on the loose. Mishawaka Police want to find Michael Lindsey, 48, to question about that incident and attempted abductions of two other women in Mishawaka.

Even in the seemingly safe community of West Lafayette, women stay cautious.

"I've done some self-defense training kind of thing. I think a lot of people prey on people who look weak or look like they're going to shrink," said Chris Bodner, of West Lafayette.

"It's hard to go alone places nowadays," added Jenny Mose, a Purdue Junior.  "I mean, it's always good to protect yourself and be cautious of where you are and you're surroundings. It is something I think about on a daily basis."

"I think it should be a concern anywhere. In any community. I don't think it matters where you live," said Cassie Hilleboe, a West Lafayette mother.

West Lafayette Police Detective Sergeant Cindy Marion said every woman should be concerned about their personal safety. She said preparation is key to survival if you are faced with danger.

"It's really important for women to have some idea of what to do if they get in a dangerous situation so they have some idea, something they can do to protect themselves," said Marion.

She said one simple step is most important.

"That's to pay attention to what's going on around you all the time. To notice the things as you're walking out of the store, or walking into your home or walking up to your car, to pay attention to all the things that are going on in that parking lot or around your house," said Marion.

Marion said if someone approaches you in a threatening way, yell, but do not scream.

"If you scream it's a different breathing pattern," she explained.  "Yelling will help you continue to breathe appropriately."

Marion also recommended yelling statements such as "Get away from me!" "Leave me alone!" or "Stay back!"  She said to avoid yelling questions, such as "What do you want?," which can elicit different reactions from those around you.

Another tip is to avoid parking next to large vehicles, which can not only block your view but also prevent others from seeing what is happening to you.  Also, Marion said to carry your keys in your hand, placing one key in between your fingers, to be used as a bit of a weapon if necessary.  No matter what, stay alert to your surroundings.  Your preparation can save your life.

The West Lafayette Police Department offers free self-defense training.  For more information about their RAD, or Rape Aggression Defense, classes for women, kids, and seniors click HERE.
