WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Paying for your prescriptions can cost a bundle, but there are ways to trim back. Amy Arbogast, CVS Pharmacist, said saving money at the pharmacy counter could begin at your doctor's office.
"Probably one of the best ways is through generic medications both on prescriptions and over the counter," she said. "They are safe, they're effective, they are approved by the FDA, they have the same active ingredient as brand named products, really the only difference is price."
Arbogast said another way to cut back is to make sure all of your prescriptions go through the same pharmacy, lowering the risk of you buying two medicines that essentially do the same thing. Of course, when buying over-the-counter medicines it is always a good idea to look for coupons or sales.
"One of the best ways that I save money in my household is by buying in bulk when it comes to over-the-counter medications," said Arbogast. "So, for example, something we use a lot of in my household is generic Tylenol or Acetaminophen. I would definitely buy in bulk to lower the cost per unit."
Many employers offer flexible spending accounts. This allows people to put money aside that won't be taxed. The money can be used for medicines, prescriptions, and other health items. Also, look into discount cards or loyalty programs which many drugstores offer. These offer customers special discounts.
Some people turn to the internet as a way to save on their prescription drugs but Arbogast cautions people only to use reputable sites because saving money is never worth risking your health.
"Especially if it's an internet site from another country that does not have an FDA," she said. "You want to make absolutely sure that it's something that is approved by the FDA, you know how it's stored, you know how it's shipped to you. So, you have a safe and effective product."
Arbogast said sticking with the websites connected directly to major stores and pharmacies are the safest options when ordering online.
The United Way of Greater Lafayette is offering another way to save through a free prescription drug discount card.
The FamilyWize cards could save families as much as 35% on their medication costs. To pick up a card visit any Pay Less or Marsh Pharmacy, or select CVS Pharmacies on 350 South, U.S. 52, or in Market Square. For more call the United Way at (765) 742-9077 or the United Way Website by clicking here.
