WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - As some make New Year's Resolutions expanding the list to include pets could be rewarding for the faithful companion.
Every new year some people want to break old habits like quitting smoking, or start a new one like exercising. But, don't forget some of those closest to you.
Purdue Wellness Veterinarian Lorriane Corriveau said make a new year's resolution to keep our pet healthy in 2009.
"Pets are a big part of our life, so why not include them with out new years resolutions? Nutrition is a big key, not only for weight control but also there are medical conditions that can lead to problems that need certain special diets," Corriveau said.
"You may want to make it part of your resolution to not only brush your dog maybe on a daily basis, kinda like Josie here-she needs to get brushed to get little mats when she's outside running around-but also brushing teeth is another helpful way to groom your pet," Corriveau said.
Corriveau said there are many things that we do that can be applied to our animals too such as exercising. She said walking or jogging with your pet can help you stay on a routine.
"People that start an exercise program and start it with their pet, actually stick with that program longer then if they didn't exercise with their pet," Corriveau said.
Also, spaying and neutering pets can add years to their lives.
Even if you don't have a pet, there are still ways to help. Corriveau suggests donating time, effort or resources to a local shelter.
