WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - The West Lafayette City Council passed an ordinance tonight to create a new division of the police department to combat nuisances.
Mayor John Dennis worked with the police department and the Department of Development to put together a Community Service Division.
That division will help Police deal with issues like excessive noise, over occupancy and trash.
It is expected to begin August 1st, and some West Lafayette residents say it can't come soon enough.
" We need something more than what we have, clearly. I mean code enforcement has been a perennial problem and we have to have improvements otherwise the neighborhoods going to go down and they'll take part of the city with it I'm afraid," said Ted Wachs.
New Chauncey resident Ted Wachs said trash and noise along with over-occupany is a constant problem in his neighborhood. And others share his concerns.
"I think I can speak for the majority of the new Chauncey Neighborhood that we are concerned for our neighborhood maybe to the point of where fear sort of becomes unhealthy," said resident Danny Weiss.
But city officials said they may have a solution.
"We feel it's incredibly important to create a division that's going to deal with specifically with those nuisance crimes," said West Lafayette Mayor John Dennis.
"The code enforcement program with the city of West Lafayette has always been in the department of development, and when we started talking about how can we make it better, how can we be more effective with what we want to do," said West Lafayette Development Director Chandler Poole.
While some New Chauncey residents said their neighborhood especially needs a program like this, Police Captain Chris Leroux said it will tackle issues for the entire city.
"Grass height and those type of trash issues and stuff affect all of our neighborhood so there might be a greater need in Chauncey but it's not just focused there, it's city wide," said Leroux.
The West Lafayette Police Department is the point of contact for this new division.. when it starts August first.
But as time goes by it may develop own contact number.
