TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) - The broken gas main has been secured at Tippecanoe County Fairgrounds, and the YMCA has been reopened. The Fairgrounds remain closed.
LPD said there was a gas main break near the water tower at the Fairgrounds on Teal Road. The leak began when a mower hit a gas line.
The YMCA was evacuated, and children were placed on air-conditioned buses and sent to the gymnasium of the former Durgan Elementary School off South 18th Street. The children had lunch at Durgan and will return to the YMCA shortly after lunch.
The Bill DeFouw Tent Sale at the fairgrounds was also evacuated due to the gas leak. The people attending the sale were asked to leave and move to the southern part of the fairgrounds closer to Jefferson Square.
Lafayette Fire and Police Departments responded to the scene. Vectren crews responded to the scene and the gas leak was fixed around 11:00 a.m.
The whole fairgrounds area was blocked off during the leak.
