OXFORD, Ind. (WLFI) - Tough economic times are forcing Benton Community School Corporation to reduce staff and programs.
The school board voted on ways to cut expenses.
The vote eliminated two elementary counselors, a custodian
and required early retirement packages for five staff members, as
well as cutting back hours, shifting responsibilities and slashing
transportation costs.
Superintendent Ross Sloat says the board had to act immediately to reduce deficit spending.
"It's on your mind all the time really," Sloat said. "Looking for ways you can save, but you got to have a timely fashion because of teacher's contracts, non-renewal dates, so that's why you act in the spring."
Sloat says schools will receive stimulus money, but at this time he doesn't know how it will affect the budget.
