LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - The United Way of Greater Lafayette met its goal of $5 million for the 34th consecutive year. A victory celebration was held at The Muse in downtown Lafayette. The grand total for the 2008 campaign was $5,000,485.
Executive Director, James Taylor, said the tough economic times made fundraising efforts difficult.
"It's been a long campaign, and what a wonderful community to come together and give us the best shot," Taylor said.
Campaign Chairman, Gary Lehman, was nervous about the fact that the United Way may not meet the goal. He said the fact that the Greater Lafayette community pulled together at the last minute, shows the greatness of the community.
"Once again, this community showed how generous they are and how committed they are to the United Way. My phone was ringing all night long with people saying, 'here's an extra $1,000, an extra $500, here's an extra $100,'" Lehman said.
