You might have cash with your name on it that you didn't know about. Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller reminded Hoosiers to look online for any unclaimed property that might belong to them. He said if you haven't looked lately, go to IndianaUnclaimed.com again, because more properties are added every day.
Last year, the state received more than 7,000 properties, totaling more than $1.2 million in new assets belonging to people with last-known addresses in the Lafayette area. A total of more than $6.4 million worth of unclaimed properties belongs to Hoosiers in Tippecanoe, Benton, and Warren Counties.
"This is one of the more fun parts of the job as Attorney General is to help people reunite with their missing funds. Particularly in an economy where everybody's, lets say, in need of a little extra money," said Zoeller.
Consumers can visit the website to search for property in their name and the names of their family and friends. In total, the state's unclaimed property database holds more than $383 million in assets. In 2008, the attorney general's office returned more than 58,000 properties totaling $35 million in unclaimed property. The state holds assets for 25 years and if a property is not claimed, the value remains with the state.
