LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - A robbery gone bad led to a shooting outside a Lafayette Subway restaurant.

Lafayette police said two parties met outside the Subway on State Road 38 East to work out a sale of some Craigslist items.

But what started as an exchange of items, ended with an exchange of bullets.

"Two vehicles met during the sale of the items. It was apparently a robbery that went bad," said Lafayette Sergeant Bob Baumgartner.

He said he doesn't know what items were being sold outside the Subway sandwich shop. But he does know it caused a controversy that led to the shooting.

"Both parties involved were armed, shots were fired," he said.
"The preliminary investigation that we have is that no one was hit. We had rounds going in both directions to the east and to the west."

The window of a vacant store nearby was the only thing caught in the crossfire. Baumgartner said no one was injured. And police responded quickly.

"Ironically we had an officer right across the street at the Family Express towing a vehicle when this all happened so he actually was witness to the shots being fired at least hearing the shots being fired," said Baumgartner.

That officer, John Wells, immediately called for backup. One of the groups involved in the shooting took off in a van. They were pulled over within minutes on 350 South near U-S 52. Others were confronted by police in the Subway parking lot.

"When officers arrived they found one of the people involved with the shooting with a gun in his hand. As soon as officers arrived he was ordered to place the gun on the ground. he cooperated and was handcuffed and detained," said Baumgartner.

Police said they believe all people involved in the shooting are in police custody.

At this time their names are not being released and no arrests have been made.

Police would not allow any witnesses to speak about the shooting.. because it's an ongoing investigation.

It was initially erroneously reported that the items were from eBay, rather than Craigslist.
