LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Don't spin your wheels looking for ways to save money. Bill Baugh, Mulhaupts Bicycle Shop Manager, said as gas prices go up more people show interest in buying a bike.
"I had one guy that came in last year and bought a bike for the second time in two years and he figures he saves enough money over a two year period that he can buy a new bike every year.
But it's not just new bikes. People are using Mulhaupt's repair shop to fix up their old bikes. It's all in an effort to keep more money in their pockets.
"Last year they were buying a bicycle because gas prices were so high," said Baugh. "Seems this year a lot of people are bringing in bikes to be repaired."
Of course, there are other benefits beyond saving money.
"I can go places cars can't I suppose," said Philip Jarvis, bicyclist and Purdue student.
There are health benefits as well.
"The exercise is just good for you and the cardio you get from riding is a lot better than riding that car to work," said Baugh.
Baugh said his stores biggest seller is a hybrid bike which is a cross between a leisure and a road bike. He said a quality hybrid bike would cost around $395 which may seem like a hefty price. However, considering a bike could last more than 15 years, you could win big in the long run.
