Murder suspect back in court

Sentenced to 3 years for unrelated offense

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - A Lafayette man suspected of murdering his roommate will serve three years in jail for an unrelated charge. 28-year-old Wesley Kelly pleaded guilty to to Failure to Register as a Convicted Sex Offender in Tippecanoe Superior Court 5. Judge Les Meade ordered Kelly to the maximum sentence of three years in jail. Kelly will get credit for the 77 days he served while waiting for trial. Kelly is the suspect in the murder of 52-year-old Steven Lee Smith. Police say Kelly told them he hit Smith on December sixth, and Smith fell into the Wabash River. Search efforts for Smith's body have been suspended until the weather improves. Kelly has not yet been charged in Smith's death.
