LAFAYETTE, Ind. - For Members of the Battle Ground Saddle Club horse riding offers a relaxing way to spend an afternoon, but with the nearest horse trail more than an hour away from Lafayette some members are spending more time on the road then on the trail. That's why the club is petitioning the State of Indiana to have horse trails added to Prophetstown State Park.

"It would be great to go there and spend more time riding than I do driving and getting home. That's one of the rules I have. I have to ride longer than I drive," said club member Rita Lockridge.

"Even if we had a trail where we could ride for an hour or two hours...if you don't have to spend half a day getting there and getting back you'll spend a lot more time on the horse," said club member Cecilia Wozniak.

Club member Rita Lockridge said adding a horse trail to Prophetstown could also attract new visitors to the park.

"The historical part of Prophetstown makes a big difference. There was a lot of stuff that happened. I think with Prophet's Rock and the indian battles there should be some draws," said Lockridge.

As of now the petition has over one-thousand signatures. Cecilia Wozniak says the club plans to present it to both the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and the Governor's Office.
