LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Production on the Subaru 2010 Legacy begins Monday, April 27 at SIA. Despite troubles for American automakers like GM, Subaru will ramp up its production here in Lafayette. Vice President Tom Easterday said the Lafayette plant will kick into full gear this summer manufacturing new Legacys and Outbacks.
"We're very excited about the production of those two vehicles, they are designed for the US market with better fuel economy and more space," Easterday said.
SIA does share suppliers with GM and Ford. But Easterday said despite GM's recently announced shutdowns, Subaru's suppliers are diversified enough to stay strong.
"We're still concerned about that obviously we want to make sure for Indiana's economy that there is a strong suppler base overall but for our suppliers right now, we believe they will be fine," Easterday said.
The 2010 Legacy uses a new Lineartronic CVT, or Continuously Variable Transmission which aids in better fuel economy. Easterday said that adds up to about 3 miles more per gallon.
"It's got smoother performance with the new transmission because it shifts gears much smoother. And it also helps with fuel efficiency and on the Turbo Charge version of it helps lower emissions," Easterday said.
Easterday said the Legacy's improved fuel economy and lower emissions is an example of the company's commitment to improving the environment. Since 2004, Lafayette plant has been a zero-landfill plant. Easterday said Subaru's customers and employees appreciate its eco-friendly initiatives.
"The brand has always been environmentally conscience and it fits very well with typical Subaru customer who loves the outdoors," Easterday said.
The 2010 Subaru Legacy should be ready for sale on dealership lots by late July.
The 2010 Legacy will be featured at the Earth Day Indiana
celebration in downtown Indianapolis.
