BATTLE GROUND, Ind. (WLFI) - The Wabash Valley Trust for Historic Preservation hopes federal money can help save a piece of history.

The group teamed up with the Lafayette Housing Consortium to renovate a house at 206 Railroad Street in Battle Ground. The home was originally built in 1889 and is now vacant. Aimee Jacobson, Lafayette Community Development Director, said the consortium is providing $150,012 in funds from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development.

"It really is a historically significant area," she said. "It's really an outstanding property in the town of Battle Ground and they've gone through the rezoning process so the town is really behind the project."

Jacobson said the Wabash Valley Trust is working with a private developer to turn the house into two apartment units for low-income renters for at least 10 years. She said the work will start as soon as possible and will be complete by April 2010.
