LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Tippecanoe County taxpayers will get the chance to comment on taxes at a public hearing tomorrow.
Treasurer Bob Plantenga said the Department of Local Government Finance will hold a public hearing to hear opposition to the 2009 budgets, tax rates and levies of any entity in the county. He said all of the entities held local public meetings, but the DLGF hearing is the final step in the process for the state. Many common groups benefit from property taxes, including the bus system, libraries, schools and townships, according to Plantenga.
Plantenga said this is the last step before the state issues the tax rates.
"If there is no one contesting or if it's a thing that the state can handle quickly, then the state will be issuing the tax rates to the county auditor. After that happens, the auditor still has to come up with a percentage or two, some Homestead credit percentages that have to be calculated once the rates are received," said Plantenga.
To attend the DLGF public hearing, head to the Tippecanoe County Office Building Wednesday, June 17. It will be held at 9:00 a.m. in the Wabash Room.
Plantenga said there are still a few more steps needed before tax bills are complete.
