DELPHI, Ind. (WLFI) - Contemporary art is melding with Delphi history this weekend.
A new art gallery featuring native Carroll County artists is
opening its doors during the Heritage Transportation Festival this
weekend.
The Opera House Gallery is a part of the historic Opera House
district dating back to 1865. Anita Werling, Opera House
Advisory Board Chair, said over the years several famous people
visited the opera house including James Whitcomb Riley.
"The first event was in 1865 and it was a dance for soldiers
coming home from the civil war," she said. "At that time it had a
flat floor and then in 1882 it was converted into a opera house
with tiered seating."
The group plans to eventually renovate the opera house as
part of a revitalization effort in downtown Delphi.
The opening for the Opera House Gallery of Contemporary Art will be held Friday, June 19th from 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturday, June 20th from 10a.m. to 4 p.m. The gallery is located at 109 South Washington Street in Delphi. The event is free and open to the public.
