Fountain Co. Jail faces more costs

COVINGTON, Ind. (WLFI) - The Fountain County Sheriff's Department is on the move to a temporary home to make way for renovations at the jail in Covington, but moving the jail's inmates has become a difficult task.

Chief Deputy Dana Jeffries said all of the county's prisoners will be temporarily housed in Warren and Montgomery counties for several weeks as work begins at the jail.He said transporting the inmates between counties for housing and court dates has become expensive and time consuming.

"It does increase the burden on us for transports, and that's a big issue because the cost of everything. Maintenance of our vehicles, cost of gas even though that is considerably less that it was a year ago, but it still eats up our fuel budget just transporting prisoners" said Jeffries.

Jeffries says the jail staff is being moved to a makeshift office in the county courthouse. Work is expected to begin on the jail Monday.
