Woman saves $15,000 using coupons

ATTICA, Ind. (WLFI) - Imagine saving thousands of dollars just from clipping coupons.

One local woman has done just that, and now she is sharing her secret with others.

"Last year I saved $15,600," said Annie Shaw. "This year I have saved about $6,000 so far."

So how does she do it? Shaw said her secret is learning how stores work.

Over time Shaw has been able to figure out what products go on sale when. She said stores like Pay Less Supermarket, Marsh Supermarket, and Meijer offer double coupon days. She combines her coupons with sale prices and is able to buy products cheap, many times absolutely free. She routinely gets items like cake mixes, mustard, plug-in air fresheners, medicines, salad dressing and much more - for next to nothing.

"Our normal grocery bill is 75% off all the time," Shaw said.

Shaw's husband Brian said he doesn't completely understand how Annie finds such great deals but you won't hear him complain.

"We'd go down the aisle and she'd put 20 packages of diaper wipes and I'd said 'How are we going to afford this? We don't need this many right now' and she educated me very quickly as to we're getting paid to take these or I'm getting these for $.25 a piece," he said.

"There's a saying online that says if you give a woman a coupon, you feed her for a day. Teach her how to coupon you feed her family forever," said Shaw. "Our family could not have survived if it hadn't been for coupons."

So, WLFI followed Shaw on a shopping trip to see if she could live up to her reputation. How did she do?

"I gave her a $10 bill and I got a $1 bill back and I saved $56.63," she said.

Shaw left the store spending less than $9. It's a great reminder to all of us to think twice before throwing out those Sunday coupons. You could be throwing out cold hard cash.
