WHITE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) - Emergency workers are watching the water levels and alerting
home owners when to evacuate. News Channel 18 spent time with
Department of Natural Resources officers who are keeping an eye out
to keep people safe.
It may not look like it as water continue to rush in a rage, but
the flow of water finally slowed at the Norway Dam. Not in time to
keep water out of homes in White County. Department of Natural
Resource officers like Clay Webb spent the day on boats going door
to door.
"We made sure homes that are flooding have their gas and
electricity turned off," he said.
Even with all the water, the concern now in Diamond Point is
fire. DNR officers turned off utilities to flooded homes so more
home owners don't find more damage when they return.
"We've got enough property damage from the water," said Webb.
"We don't want people to also find fire damage."
The battle now is against more than water. Frigid temperatures
pose another threat.
"People who've decided to stay in their homes flooded with water
could face hypothermia because both the water and air are really
cold," explained Webb.
DNR officers stay outside for hours at a time around the clock,
making some wish their outdoor office came equipped with a
heater.
