WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - West Lafayette Community School Corporation calls back more teachers.

Three Cumberland teachers will return to the classroom in the fall. The teachers were originally told they might not teach because of budget cuts, but money from the stimulus bill for Title One will now pay their salary.

These teachers will have a special role to play at the school.

"Classroom teachers. We're calling them interventionalists. They'll do intervention for students who need remedial help in reading and math, but teach regular classes doing that programming," said Superintendent Rocky Killion.

So far, the district called back five teachers total. The board hopes fundraising efforts will raise enough money to call back two more elementary teachers. SOS or Save Our Schools recently sent nine thousand letters to the West Lafayette community.

SOS member Alan Karpick said the community is answering the plea.

"About $13,000 in the first couple of weeks after it was sent to homes. We are very pleased, but we can always use more," said Karpick.

The SOS push brought the district $150,000 to date. The efforts might even appear in the pages of a national magazine.

"We received a call today from People magazine," said Killion. "They want to run a story about our school district on fund raising efforts to save our teachers."

No word when an article might appear. News Channel 18 will let know when you can find the issue on the news stand.
