TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) -
Summer is the time to travel for many families. The tough economy isn't stopping travel, but it will keep many families closer to home. Bob Wollenburg of West Lafayette is looking forward to a trip to Wisconsin for the 4th of July. He said it's one of the few times he's left Greater Lafayette this year.

"We haven't traveled as much as we normally do," he said.

AAA predicts fewer people will travel this 4th of July because of uncertainty about the economy, but for those wanting to get away, there are some sensational sales.

"Some of the airfares are really good deals. A lot of good deals on hotels," said Sue Haring of Lafayette's AAA branch.

Many families are still taking time to relax, but sticking closer to home. Top picks include amusement parks. Paula Woolwine's family did just that.

"We just got back from a vacation," she said. "We went to Holiday World."

Others are discovering how magical the Midwest can be.

"I had someone wanting to know about the Harry Potter exhibit in Chicago. We had someone coming in asking about St. Louis. We even had someone come in asking about Evansville, Indiana," said Haring.

AAA suggested looking at the best of the Midwest--a spot you've always wanted to go that's close to home. National Parks can also be an inexpensive travel destination. AAA said all national parks will offer free admission July 18 and 19.
