Tippecanoe County, Ind. (WLFI) - A woman who continues to be a driving force behind many community organizations receives a YWCA Salute to Women. Sandra Pearlman spends many of her days helping to better Tippecanoe County. Her latest endeavor is serving on the board of the Tippecanoe County Historical Association.
"I've always been sorry I didn't take more history in school, so I'm trying to make up for it," said Sandra Pearlman as she turns the pages of a photo album.
Pearlman sifts through old photographs from Otterbein at the Tippecanoe County Historical Association. She's served on the board for two years. Her work at the organization is one of the many reasons she was nominated for a YWCA Salute to Women.
"I don't know if I deserve it, but I was glad I was awarded the Salute," she said.
Pearlman worked with the United Way for 11 years, participates in Friends of Downtown, the West Lafayette Redevelopment Commission, and West Lafayette Parks and Recreation. Those are just a few of many organizations she helps. Her long time friend Charlie Shook said Pearlman is humble about her community service.
"Sandy is not the type of person who seeks out recognition at all. That's one of the most admirable characteristics of an individual," he explained.
The woman who nominated her for the award describes Pearlman as "coming alive when she talks about her love for the community." Pearlman's passion for preserving Tippecanoe County History shows as she carefully peruses the collection of old photos.
"I think everyone should give to their community," she said about her volunteerism. "It's made me feel worthwhile."
Friends said Tippecanoe County is fortunate to have Pearlman helping to lead organizations that touch so many lives.
"Sandy is an effective leader. She has a quiet but strong spirit that gets things done," said Shook.
Pearlman said she volunteers at so many different organizations
because she is devoted to the whole community.
